“Something bothering you?” Gabriel sat next to him.
Venanzio smiled. “No, no problem with me. I’m a pretty lonely guy.”
“The important you are not like this down on the field” he exclaimed with a smile. “It has been a few days since your arrival and I would like to know your feelings about.”
“Everything here is different from the team I come from” he replied. “The training sections are more professional.”
“Do you mind? Are you uncomfortable?”
Venanzio shook his head. “Not at all. My only concern is to live up to this great responsibility. But I want to prove to myself and to you, who are spending money to keep me here, I am up to it.”
Gabriel smiled. “Are you worried about the money spent on you?”
Venanzio nodded.
“You mustn’t think that way” said Gabriel. “We do it not for you, but for us. This may sound rather harsh to you, but to us, you are an investment—a source of glory and profit. You must never forget it. We may like you and we will be sorry but if you are not up to it we will not hesitate to send you away. This is our way of doing. If it wasn’t, we wouldn’t have gotten where we are.”
Venanzio was surprised by such a cruel speech.
“I know, I understand your thoughts” continued Gabriel. “You are amazed and disappointed to be treated like a vegetable to be sold when it’s ripe, but you must never forget it for yourself and for our benefit.”
Venanzio nodded.
“That does not, however, cancel we can be good together, and that is the positive side. Each of us helps each other and is always available. Some joys are hard to explain when a dream comes true. When, after so much effort, you reach your goal, it seems to touch the sky with one finger. Try looking into an old player’s face when he remembers moments of glory. Looks like he’s touching the sky again. In every player on the field he can see himself.”
Venanzio smiled at the image of the old player.
“Here you will become a man in every sense. It will then be up to you to decide whether you will be a good man or not, and it’s not necessarily about skill on the playing field but about character growing within you. You always have to remember that in a few years, no matter what you’re become, you gonna have to give up. So try to make the most of your time. We will give you every opportunity because we have seen the potentialities within you, but it will be up to you to bring them down—no one else.”
