Part 2
He had no news of Zero, nor of the other
characters he met on his long journey. After the disappointment and
sadness of the following days, he had to take back his life.
Sometimes, when he woke up in the morning, he was puzzled, thinking
it was almost a dream. But Little Soul stood there reminding him as
if they had situations actually happened beyond all logic as well as
the people he had promised assistance to. Instead, he was the one
who failed and, for this reason, was expelled.
In Zero’s words, there was a guilty verdict
for not having had faith. But crossing an immense ocean with the
opposite wind on a small plane suitable for touring flight was
madness. Anyone in his place would have had the same legitimate
sense of fear. To win it, the previous experiences were not enough,
nor was Zero’s smiling and relaxed face. There were stormy waves
waiting for him and the fear of dying had prevailed.
For days on end, he sat in his chair next to
his flight path—unable to start over and give a new meaning to his
life. Even at night the thought continued to return to the strange
journeys and the people he met.
He didn’t know when he started living again.
He did it progressively. The thought was gradually diverted toward
more concrete actions. The memories became more and more enveloped
by the fantasy taking on the typical impression of dreams. He
started mowing the grass on the track, cleaning the hangar, parking
and driveway.
Only sometimes, while he was on board of
Little Soul, alone or with some customers, he would unnecessarily
check whether the wind was pushing him toward a planned destination.
Like that afternoon when, for the periodic check on the stability of
the plane, he was in front of a storm. He avoided the natural
instinct to deviate and let himself be transported inside. The
gesture was both defeated and destructive. He was forced to land in
a cornfield and, in addition to being transported to the airfield,
he was forced to pay for the damage to the farmer.
From that day on, he vowed never to tempt fate
again and considered his adventure finally over.
