Part 2
The sun had not yet risen when Little Soul
took off for the ocean. A dense ditch prevented from seeing the
horizon. Abandoned the mainland, they were immersed in a uniform
gray without being able to understand where the sky ended and the
sea began.
When the sun rose, the moat ended by showing
the line of the horizon with the typical feeling of being stuck in
the air. Only the waves of the sea below them, crushing against
themselves, showed the slow progress of Little Soul in a sense of
loss. He’d never felt so small and helpless.
Zero, on the contrary, seemed perfectly
comfortable. He looked at the sea as if he was on a cruise on a
transatlantic.
After three hours of quiet flight the tank
reached half capacity. Moving on, he wouldn’t have had a chance. He
continued to observe the level in order to attract Zero’s attention
in order to hear his singing laugh and his voice warning how the
rehearsal had ended. He could have reversed course.
Zero, on the other hand, stood still and
watched the waves move.
He had to make a decision and he had to do it
now without waiting any longer to have any chance of survival.
Zero turned to look at him. “You can still
change your mind and turn the course if you don’t feel able to face
the fear of falling down.”
Alex gave a long sigh shaking his head. He
looked at the sea, looked up at the sky and smiled ironically with
his shoulders up. “Soon the ocean will decide our fate. We’re gonna
die out there somewhere in the middle of the waves. As far as I’m
concerned, we can go ahead.”
Zero smiled, nodded and put his head back.
“Then we can eat something. He took a bag from which he extracted
two big sandwiches and two bottles of water.
“The condemned man’s last meal?” Alex asked
laughing and shaking his head.
“I know, it’s just a frugal meal,” said Zero.
“but tonight we will eat authentic Scottish food.”
Together they began to eat as the waves
shattered on themselves, seemed to warn them of how, very soon, they
too would be part of the immensity in which they were located.
