Part 2
That night, a van came into the camp, parked
not far away. Four people, two boys and two girls got out and
stretched. They stopped near the steep descent that marked the end
of the parking lot offering a view of the sea. They watched the view
for a long time. When they noticed Florian, one of the girls broke
away from the group and approached.
“Are you camped here too?” she asked. Her name
was Miriam.
Florian nodded as the girl looked carefully at
the small house. “Where did you buy it?” she asked with interest.
“I didn’t buy it” he replied. “I built it
myself.”
“Beautiful!” she considered. Her friends also
watched every detail from a distance.
“I would like to have a similar structure”,
Miriam confided. “It would raise us many problems in our travels.”
Her friends, without paying much attention,
headed for the van, pulling out the tent to install it.
Miriam’s young age, no later than twenty, her
smooth blond hair and slim build gave her a certain prowess. She
stood beside Florian, looking at him with interest. Her eyes seemed
drawn to her gaze as if she had known him for a long time. She tried
unsuccessfully to remember when it happened to meet him. Every once
in a while, she would show a smile on her face—seemingly for no
reason.
“We are four friends”, she explained, bowing
her head. “We are making a journey together to see if it’s possible
to become more than friends.”
Florian nodded to the unusual union of people
who looked so different. It was not normal not to exchange a look
with each other—any effusion. It seemed like a random group like
they met the day before.
“Do you mind if we eat together tonight?”
Miriam asked. “The boys will soon light the fire and you could stay
together with us. You wouldn’t be here alone.”
He nodded accepting the invitation.
